Practical guidance that helps project owners and engineers make a more accurate decision. How do you choose the right generator capacity?
Start with the actual load list, motor starting demand, simultaneous operation and daily running hours. Adding nameplate ratings is not enough, because inrush current, load type, temperature and altitude all affect the selection.
What the engineer needs
- Rated power of each load and motor starting demand.
- Loads that run at the same time.
- Whether the generator is prime or standby.
- Installation location, ventilation and expected ambient temperature.
Prime vs. Standby
Prime rating is used when the generator runs for long hours with a variable load within manufacturer limits. Standby rating is for emergency use when the mains fail, and for limited periods. Always follow the official datasheet and do not compare two generators by kVA number alone.
Why preventive maintenance protects your investment
Oil, filters, cooling, batteries and the controller work as one system. Tracking running hours and scheduled inspection reveals leaks, weak charging and overheating before they cause a sudden stop or expensive damage.
